Ubuntu 16.04 touchy WiFi Internet

Bug Description

When I installed Ubuntu 16.04 I had to reconfigure our modem and router setup from bridge mode to DHCP mode. As a result, I lost all ability on my computer to connect to WiFi.

However, the other eight connected devices (ex. iPad, PlayStation) have Internet connection.

After power-cycling our router and modem I'm now able to connect but I get 2 Mbps download speed, and web pages load up slowly.

Hello,

Unfortunately, my WiFi did not hold out, and I could not run the requested command or send the results from my system.

I learned through asking for help on the Ubuntu Forums that my WiFi chipset (the Qualcomm Atheros AR928X) is not supported or working as intended on Ubuntu 16.04. It is reported that it was last working on Ubuntu 14.04.3, but not on Ubuntu 14.04.4.

As a result, I'm trying Ubuntu 14.04.1 on my system in hopes that I will get Internet, as I require it for work and for pleasure.

I hope this bug will find its way to the right people.

N, now that you are testing a different version of the OS, would you then be able to provide the results requested in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1586650/comments/1 ?

If the wireless isn't stable enough, could you provide the results utilizing https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Filing_bugs_when_offline_or_using_a_headless_setup ?

Hi Christopher,

I've run and submitted the requested Apport command. I'm currently on Ubuntu 14.04.4, and the Internet has been great -- very stable and reliable.

It was brought to my attention through my inquiries on Ubuntu Forums that my WiFi chipset, the AR928X, seems to stop working with newer Linux kernels. Because I installed Ubuntu 14.04.1, I get the benefit of staying on kernel 3.13. That's the main reason I don't want to upgrade anything beyond that kernel.

This person also seemed to think it was kernel-related:

Thanks for your ongoing support.

N, in order to allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue, at your earliest convenience, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D ? Please keep in mind the following:
1) The one to test is at the very top line at the top of the page (not the daily folder).
2) The release names are irrelevant.
3) The folder time stamps aren't indicative of when the kernel actually was released upstream.
4) Install instructions are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds .

If testing on your main install would be inconvenient, one may:
1) Install Ubuntu to a different partition and then test this there.
2) Backup, or clone the primary install.

If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where X, and Y are the first two numbers of the kernel version, and Z is the release candidate number if it exists.

If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Also, you don't need to apport-collect further unless specifically requested to do so.

Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this report Status Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

Thank you for your understanding.

Hi Christopher,

I will require my computer and stable Internet access over the weekend, but will have time to test this early next week. Sorry to delay the process, but thank you for your patience.

I'm running Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS (4.2.0-38-generic) with an Atheros AR928X Wireless Network Adapter. WiFi works if I'm next to the WiFi base station. If I move 5 metres away, it drops out.

I have the same problem.
In windows xp the wireless works at 150 mbps, but in xubuntu 16.04 it works most of the time at 1 mbps, some times at 39 mbps.
Before in lubuntu 12.04 it worked perfect.
I could do report apport report...

Hi Christopher,

I'm getting stable Internet connection with kernel version 4.7.0-040700rc3-generic on Ubuntu 14.04.4. I've been testing it since early Monday, and it hasn't dropped connection once.

I'm able to do normal things like stream music on Spotify and watch YouTube videos. I'm getting 6 to 9 Mbps download speed and 1.9 Mbps upload speed, which is good for my ISP.

This was the first and only upstream kernel version I have tested. I've added the requested tags to the initial post, and marked it as Confirmed. Do you need me to test anything else related to this, or do any stress-testing of any sort?

So what does this mean? Will this kernel version be arriving standard with a future release of Ubuntu 16.04? In the meantime, should I just continue using this kernel with Ubuntu 14.04, or is it best if I go back to version 3.13?

Thanks for all of your patience and assistance on this.

N, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect from kernel 4.4 to 4.7-rc3 in order to identify the last bad commit, followed immediately by the first good one. Once this good commit has been identified, it may be reviewed for backporting. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#How_do_I_reverse_bisect_the_upstream_kernel.3F ?

Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions is not fully commit bisecting.

Also, the kernel release names are irrelevant for the purposes of bisecting.

After the fix commit (not kernel version) has been identified, then please mark this report Status Confirmed.

Thank you for your understanding.

It work perfectly under windows 7 with this two computers.
