Bug Description

Hi,

Ubuntu 16.04 here w/ Unity

I sometimes have some notification about available update for my system.

But icon for update manager never automatically shows in launcher - as it used to in previous ubuntu version. (a green background icon with an A on)
→ screenshot of expected behavior http://hpics.li/4fb6d59

After seeing the update notification in 16.04 one has to manually run update-manager or synaptic.

Is this intended behavior ?

More than 3 months later can someone tell at least if this was intended behavior ?

Notifications spring and vanish so it's very easy for users not to see them and then run a non-updated system for long… It's a basic security matter.

where many computers remained NON-updated during months

2016-11-26 that very same inefficient and misleading
behaviour also happens in 16.10

2017-01-28 Today I've booted on my 16.04 I hadn't booted for at least 2 weeks, expecting some updates. After 2 hours running, absolutely no warning any where about potential updates. So I ran synaptic and yes many updates are available http://hpics.li/ca343ba

there really is a big problem:
-> Apt-update: 37 packages can be upgraded.
-> Update Manager: 6 packages

? ? ? ? ?

@kikito I think it's not exactly the same problem. Automatic update-manager may only show "security" updates while apt-update shows all available updates.

What bothers me is the fact since I run xenial, update-manager never automatically appeared in launcher once.

Only notification.

(but you are right, in your last picture there is no security update at all so updates regarding compiz should have appeared on both sides)

Well synaptic and update-manager do not show the same update - why in my case libre-office stuff is missing in update-manager ?

And once again update-manager icon did not show in launcher yet there are security updates (imagemagick)

If never-automatically-show update-manager icon in launcher is intended behavior it sounds dangerous as most (new to ubuntu) people would probably not go further to manually update…

At least there should be a reminder somewhere - it also used to be an indicator for that some time ago.

« it also used to be an indicator for that some time ago » well not exactly for available updates but in case something went wrong with updates ( red sign in panel ).

As this somehow-wrong-behaviour can prevent people from correctly updating their system,

should it be considered as a security bug ?

Other example of confusion with a beginner / non-geek user :

https://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?pid=21550359#p21550359

He obviously never did any updates… and he's not to blame :

- he may have missed the notification
- he may have seen it but being new to ubuntu how could he know what to do then ?

Former behavior with Icon in Launcher was far more informative and obvious !

Does anybody have an opinion, idea, wish about it ?

It seems these settings in « Software & Updates » help to make updates availability more visible :
