Bug Description

With gutsy dvd cd usb not automounting, this is on three machines i have here.

Steps:

Insert usb thumb drive, mp3 player or DVD.
Device is activated.
but no response from gutsy.

What I would expect is an icon on the desktop, and the option to open in new folder, open with... etc.

The other expectation is the ability to "Safely remove"

I have looked through the bug list.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-volume-manager/+bug/23279

hal group doesn't exist, but there is haldaemon

and /etc/default/hal is DAEMON_OPTS=

When following the instructions here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingRemovableDevices

I should note that I am using Kubuntu, not gnome, so I went straight to step 9.

I then came across this error.

:~$ lshal > lshal.txt
Could not initialise connection to hald.
Normally this means the HAL daemon (hald) is not running or not ready.

this could be a problem...

I know the answer - I had done this...

For what it's worth:
I got this error on gutsy beta today, just after having modified /etc/init.d/rc with
CONCURRENCY=shell
instead of the previous
CONCURRENCY=none
(I wanted some more speed from my dual core :-)

All works now.
