Bug Description

Running Ubuntu 7.10:

The problem may be with Compiz, because it does not seem to occur when Desktop Effects are disabled. The problem I am having is in Evince, though.

When viewing a document in Evince, go into fullscreen mode, then start a presentation (using the keyboard shortcut or the Start Presentation button). The presentation will appear in a window, when it should be fullscreen. The presentation will be fullscreen if Evince is not already in fullscreen mode.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at [WWW] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in evince and compiz.

BUT, i need to confirm which version of compiz do you have, so please put the output from this command here.

sudo dpkg -l | grep compiz

If I go to presentation mode (hit F5, or select it from the menu), I get a full-screen display.

However, it works differently if Evince is in full-screen mode already.

I click Start Presentation or hit the shortcut key and end up with the presentation in a window.

Right, just with Compiz. I have only tried with Compiz and Metacity, but with Metacity the presentation always displays full-screen.

I'm having similar problems with evince when I enable compiz. Basically, evince will open with the wrong geometry (slightly higher than the screen) and more than half its window would be outside the screen (top-left corner almost at the centre of the screen). But evince is not the only application that screws up. Lyx opens all its dialogs so far in the top-left corner of the screen that I can't see the title bar. Same thing for openoffice.org which not only does that but also has completely wrong geometry for the dialog in the first place (a simple "save before quitting" dialog takes half the screen). None of those problems happen with compiz disabled, which brings two possibilities: 1) compiz is horribly broken when it comes to window placement/geometry or 2) compiz exposes the fact that most X applications are horribly broken when it comes to placement/geometry. In any case, it's not pretty.

Just a minor correction: the openoffice.org "do you want to save your changes?" dialog is actually created as full-screen, which is really annoying to say the least. I've also found the behaviour to be intermittent.

fwiw I have the same behaviour here in vanilla ubuntu 7.10 desktop, with another note: if you go into proper fullscreen presentation mode by hitting f5, then press f11 you end up back in windowed mode, but with the buttons at the top of the window to start presentation or leave fullscreen. If you then press f11 again, you stay in windowed mode, the buttons disappear and you get your menu bar back.

I have unix experience but am a gnome/ubuntu newbie, let me know if I can provide any more useful info. I am running dual-head with the nvidia driver if that makes a difference.
