Bug Description
nova.conf is configured with virt_type=kvm
When running hypervisor-show XXX | grep hypervisor_type
The result is always presented as QEMU

I gather that this is also the same is presented in Horizon on the Hypervisors tab.

Changing the value has been discussed before, there are already some older bugs for this. Changing the value in the API response would be a breaking API change so would require more discussion than just a bug fix.
