If you have a laptop where you irregularly use the external monitor, mutter will forget the position when you turn off/on the monitor.

Tim,

Do you see the same bug in 18.04 or later?

I am not reproducing this bug on latest stable mutter.

mutter:
  Installed: 3.34.3-1ubuntu1
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller:
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Cape Verde PRO [Radeon HD 7750/8740 / R7 250E] (rev 87)

I'm running a 6-head system on focal-devel, with gnome-shell/mutter and a radeon card. I do have troubles getting all the monitors working properly, and invariably am having to rejigger the positions of the extra screens. However, merely powering the monitor on and off does not trigger this behavior, at least not for me.
