Bug Description

When I log in to the desktop, for the first time after boot, the network-manager-applet crashes. If I start the nm-applet manually, F2 -> nm-applet, logs off, and log in again, nm-applet starts as expected. Network connections are established, as expected, only nm-applet crashes.

To reproduce:
1. Boot the computer
2. Log in
3. nm-applet crashes, generating a crash rapport.

My system:
uname -a:
Linux AbacusR5001 4.4.0-22-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP Thu May 5 16:53:32 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

This bug is not a duplicate of bug #1574347. The problem I am trying to describe, is that the nm-applet crashes after boot, not that it shows the wrong network status.
The crash occurs both on Wifi and cabled LAN connection.
The machine is a Lenovo R500, the output of lspci is attached.

I forgot to mention, that I have installed Ubuntu Mate 16.04 on three laptops and one stationary computer. The only one affected by this problem is a Lenovo R500.

Same here on HP Pavillion DV6710. I have to manually start nm-applet everytime I start the computer.
Kernel is 4.4.0-22-lowlatency, with binary nvidia-340.
