Bug Description

Binary package hint: gthumb

I own a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX12 digital camera. This camera can be used as a mass storage device, i.e. there is no need to use gphoto to download the photos. But under Feisty/Gutsy this camera is not detected as a mass storage device. Actually gthumb (I think it is gthumb, I am not sure, it automatically starts when I plug in the camera) tries to load a gphoto camera driver. This fails with an I/O-error.

Under Edgy this camera is detected correctly and it can be used like a mass storage device without any problems.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

I have tried this camera with Ubuntu Hardy.

When I plug in the camera, a dialog appears saying something like "A camera has been detected ...". In the background f-spot launches and a dialog appears where I can choose the camera to import from: There are three choices:

Mass Storage Device
USB
USB

Only the Mass Storage Device works. The other two result in an I/O-Error.

My interpretation is as follows:
The camera is detected simultaneously as a Mass Storage Device and as a USB-Camera. That's why both F-Spot and this dialog "A camera has been detected" launch simultaneously. But only the Mass Storage Mode seems to work. In fact, if I choose "Import pictures" from the "A camera has been detected"-dialog, f-spot launches a second time with exactly the same three choices.

Thanks. Um well, I am unsure if this bug belongs to gthumb. I guess that dialog is from gnome-volume-manager.
