Bug Description

Currently snaps can include icon themes and be set up to use those but that only makes sense if you know the theme of the target system or themes are somewhat specific to users, ideally we would have support for system themes so applications look consistant

Side issue, if you decide to include an icon theme in your snap it's better to have a cache available, snapcraft could help with that

I'm afraid this goes in the "infinite choice is always disappointing"
bucket. There are many aspects of customisation I can see us wanting to
support in snappy systems, but the icon of a piece of software is its
brand. We quite specifically want to move from a world where a
middle-man dresses up the app ("the distribution") to one where the
upstream more directly defines the user experience. In that world, there
is no room for icon themes. Can we INVALID this, please?

Sure the icon of an app is part of the brand, but what about standard icons like save/ok/print/...? Those are usually shared/defined by the system to create consistency

Right, and in order to make the two halves of that (system, apps) seem
consistent, we can't have themes in the system other than changes
between series.
