Bug Description

USB controllers are not recognized on Ubuntu Studio 16.04 LTS on a Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5 system [on chip 2.0 controller (via AMD SB950) and external onboard 3.0 controller (Etron EJ168)]. Changing EFI values in BIOS has no effect - system performs nominally within Win8.1.

DVD boots (EFI and legacy load) the live system where no USB devices are recognized.

USB stick boots (EFI and legacy) with a menu but soon ends with the following msg:

[ 4.667018] usb 4-3: device descriptor read/64, error -32
[ 4.896013] usb 4-3: device descriptor read/64, error -32

Enter 'help' for a list ob built-in commands.

(initramfs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system

Last but not least Ubuntu Studio cant be installed due to other bugs (LAN failure and EFI grub installation abort).

WORKAROUND: Set in the BIOS:
xHCI handoff - Disabled (was Enabled)
EHCI handoff - Disabled
IOMMU controller - Enabled (was Disabled)

Since USB functionality is out of action and the LAN drivers also fail, will the command be of any use?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.6 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I've been reading about it because I had the same problem when trying to load 64 bit linux mint OS from an USB stick and it seems that it happens with Gigabyte motherboards... (I have Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3)
I found the solution here:
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2367766

Configure your BIOS with the following parameters:
xHCI handoff - Enabled
EHCI handoff - Enabled
IOMMU controller - Enabled

Regards.

Hello CapitanMcFly,

many thanks for pointing me onto the right spot.

The following settings helped:

xHCI handoff - Disabled (was Enabled)
EHCI handoff - Disabled
IOMMU controller - Enabled (was Disabled)

Installation of Ubuntu Studio 16.04 successfully finished (USB devices were recognized and LAN was also working).

@Joseph Salisbury

As soon as I have fixed my RAID issues (no disks are recognized on the Marvel SATA controller - internal AMD controllers are fine) I will try to test that new mainline kernel.

Good night
