Only one subtitle displayed at any given time

Many of the videos I watch are subtitled foreign works; they generally have multiple subtitles onscreen at once, with one translating the speech and others translating onscreen text. Gstreamer invariably only displays one and more often than not it's the less helpful one, leaving me unable to tell what's been said because "episode 2" is deemed more important information.
