Bug Description

This is odd - and it appears to be in the kernel but since I'm still feeling my way around I thought someone here would be able to send it to the right place.

This issue affected a 15" Macbook Pro running kernel 4.4.0.15 on T7400 Dual Core 2.16 GHz with Radeon graphics. It's quite an elderly machine and suitable for a more modern OS since Apple no longer supports it.

When running the live disk I noticed the mouse was "sluggish" and eventually the whole thing ground to a shuddering stop. On second try, I switched on all the normal options and got it installed to the hard drive but I could not even log onto a terminal (switching from GUI to a console).

WORKAROUND: I switched the CD into text mode by appending the "TEXT" switch (removing QUIET and NOSPLASH) and ran the live disk: what do you know, it worked like a charm, installed without any incidents and rebooted correctly.

I'm currently upgrading the system to see if that creates any further issues.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1574721/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.6 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.
