Just saw this with a resized Nautilus window: When trying to rename, the search box pops up in the bottom right corner containing the characters i just typed, so it seems Nautlus is stuck in a directory/file "search mode".

I just reset my Unity settings following this http://askubuntu.com/questions/620947/how-do-i-reset-my-unity-configuration-on-15-04 guide and the problem disappeared.

Sorry, no idea, i also had really weird bahiour with Firefox, so i assume a lot of things were messed up after the upgrade from 15.10.

weird, upgrades don't touch user configs ... in any case closing, the bug is not very useful without more details, feel free to reopen if you figure out what settings was creating the issue

I'm facing the exactly same behavior on Ubuntu 16.04 since a few days.
Reset as described by Alex N. didn't fix it.

I made an observation regarding this issue: when switching to grid view in nautilus, everything works fine. It's just the list view that shows this behavior.

I am also facing this behavior.
- List view
- Clicking a File or Folder
- Choosing Rename either from Menu or by pressing F2 makes no difference
- Typing exits the rename mode, and the search box on the down right pops up containing the typed character

Additional observation:
-Trying to rename a file/folder which is *not* on top of the list and then typing "d" does not exit edit mode immediately, instead the file at the top of the list view is suddenly selected and in edit mode.
Typing "d" again ( top entry is still selected and in edit mode) now exits edit mode like other chars and the search box pops up with one "d"

I also have the same issue with nautilus in Ubuntu 16.10.
It affects only the list view, grid view works fine.
Also other file browsers like Thunar work fine in both list and grid view.

Additional notes:
- Pressing Ctrl seems to switch off the editing mode.
