The upstream author indicates both are fixed in 2.2 released September 2, 2007.

tried with Hardy Alpha 3, there is still the old version, so it still crashes, should I request a sync?

I am in contact with the upstream author and we curently do not have an idea what could be the issue. However, a temporary workaround is available for changing the hosts:
- add the applet

there is as many Ns as you have applets on you panel (at least I think), you need to enter data into hosts as list and then string.
