pipe is still busy with an old pageflip

My system locks up several times a week. There is nothing that I know of that can trigger it, it happens whether I use one monitor or two. The symptom is that the applications windows become unresponsive, then eventually also the mouse pointer, then eventually even the consoles. As far as I can tell it is associated with the log messages below from /var/log/kern.log

Pressing the power button as per normal will initiate a shutdown but without any log entries. Sometimes it can go a week with no problems other times, it can fail twice in one day.
