The error occurs on start-up consistently. Samba is also not functioning correctly, but I haven't done the troubleshooting on that.

Had the same issue.

"security = share" seems not working in the smb.conf with the last update.

Commenting it out worked for me. It was time to reconsider my overloaded smb.conf.

I can confirm that commenting out the "security = share " line in smb.conf ( or changing it to any another security mode ) works for me.
I've read on the Samba website that commenting out or removing this line from your smb.conf will by default set samba to "security = user".

I wanted to thank you that you debugged the issue and identified a workaround that you posted here.

Since it seems likely to me that this is a local configuration problem (in this case to some extend due to changed upstream support for a feature), rather than a bug in Ubuntu, I'm marking this bug as Incomplete.
