Bug Description

See: Bug #273996 reported by Murali on 2008-09-24

Many years later...
Apparently never fixed.

See Screenshot at: http://imgur.com/ktYUp4D

To date Ubuntu is still having issues with:
"Trash" has quit unexpectedly
If you reload a panel object, it will automatically be added back to the panel.

I am using Ubuntu:
Linux HTPC 3.16.0-69-generic #89~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 17 20:51:04 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Theme: Gnome Flashback Metacity

Startup programs that may affect this issue or being affected by this issue: ?
Indicator Application, Indicator-LockKeys and Variety Wallpaper Changer.

I have the bottom task bar auto-hiding so each time the bar pops up and or hides it will cause the error.
Not only is there the Trash error, it seems that other indicator apps will also crash, but Trash is the most frequent.
The Trash error is now popping up occasionally on a background image change.
This issue has gotten worse with the last distro update which is probably not the cause, but it is more frequent now.

Can we Please get this 2008 bug taken care of now?
I know that this must look as low priority to the Devs as an ascetic change to the GUI or as an option to have these indicators available, but a work around to fix this issue should not be an option any more if a user chooses to use these items.
Too many years have gone by with this error and the users of Ubuntu deserve to have a working GUI that they can , modifiy to their liking without having to work around an issue by removing items that they chose to use in their customized GUI because of an Eight Year old bug.
Ladies and Gentlemen Developers , this is not Microsoft Corporation.

I see in the old bug report that this was not answered thus the issue being closed.
Which version of gnome-applets are you running?

If this is still a valid question in my case, please instruct me on how to find the versions of the applet and I will be happy to post them.

Do you know how to use gdb? I would like to see stacktrace from crashed applet...

I might be wrong, but this could problem in cairo:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=91967

If you know how to patch software then you could try to patch cairo with patch from above bug report.

Dmitry, maybe you could prepare .deb package and/or ppa with patched cairo? I don't have time to do it... :(

I don't have Cairo running in this install unless Variety Wallpaper Changer is based on Cairo.
As for gdb, sorry never used it for debugging so I am at a complete loss on using it
I don't think Bugzilla – Bug 91967 applies here.

As you can see by this screenshot http://imgur.com/a3QDJcg

The taskbar at the bottom is nothing fancy.
It is just a plain Flashback Metacity bar with Window and GTK+ set to HighContrast, Icons set to Humanity and the cursor set to Whiteglass.
All fonts are standard for this desktop setting.

You can also notice from the screenshot that the trash icon is missing on the right side of bar.

Cairo is used in gnome-panel and libpanel-applet that is used to create applets. It is not standalone application...

I researched it a bit further and realized I was confusing it with Cairo Dock. That is something I tried out some time back. That is not installed on my system now.
I now understand where that bug report may apply now.
This Trash pop-up error is getting a bit out of hand so I do not reload it for now.

GeeMac, please upgrade cairo from that ppa and restart your session before testing. Then please report if that does fix your problem or not.

I added the repository and did the usual update and this is what I got when trying to upgrade cairo.

geemac@htpc:~$ sudo apt-get upgrade cairo

I didn't notice that the reporter is using Trusty, and uploaded only the Xenial package. Will upload a Trusty one later today.

Uploaded the Trusty package to the same PPA. Upgrade using just "sudo apt-get upgrade" (the command you typed won't work as the binary package name is libcairo2, not cairo).

The update is installed. lets see what happens. Libcairo2 is now the latest.

So far, so good. Looks as if the long awaited fix took care of the issue. I haven't seen the pop-up error yet.
I'll give it a bit more time since I haven't been using this computer for the past three days.

Dmitry, do you have any idea how to get attention from cairo devs? Just looked again at _get_image_surface function and still I am quit sure it is right fix. Maybe someone from ubuntu team could review / speak with someone from cairo?

Hi... Well It can be a partial fix. I haven't seen the pop up error yet, but now when I hover some items in the Task panel some of the text explanations (tool bar tips) or what ever Linux calls them go blank or black with or without text.
Not sure if that is related, but that started after I took a new set of updates along with the Libcairo2 update.

- Does that happens always? Even when you restart?

Can you downgrade cairo?
sudo ppa-purge ppa:mitya57/test1

Restart. Does that fix your new problem?

I pinged the bug on FD.o (looks like without any success), I don't have any contact with cairo devs unfortunately. Maybe you can get some attention by posting to <email address hidden>?

I'll try to grab a shot of the screen via my iPhone since by time I press the Print Screen key or any mouse movement the blank tag is gone.
As for the downgrade of Cairo; I can pull the PPA, but what version of Cairo am I looking for? I need something to fill the blanks with. I'll pull the PPA when i get the proper package name and version so I don't blow this HTPC up here.
I use this HTPC dual purpose. 90% of the time it is for watching TV, DVDs, etc. etc. The other 10% is browsing the web and research when there is nothing to watch.

sudo apt-get install <package-name>=<package-version-number>
OR
sudo apt-get -t=<target release> install <package-name>

Sorry I did not answer all your questions in my last post.
The error pop-up was mainly when I accessed the tool panel/taskbar at the bottom of the screen. It is set to auto hide, so every time the bar was accessed either by accessing a item or just inadvertently accessing it, the trash error would pop-up.
There was also another item that used to pop up along with it. It was part of the same group of items that included the Trash can.
That stopped some time ago. Sorry, I can't remember what that item was called.
As for restarting; yes, it came back with every restart. I turn this system of every night so it was a daily occurrence.
I'm trying to remember what group of items this was without taring down the bar and recreating it. It took me quite some time to get my system the way I want it and I don't want to take any chances messing this install up. It is a total nightmare tweaking Ubuntu along with Kodi(XBMC) from scratch, especially Ubuntu with all the quirks to fix the and tweaks to get the GUI the way you may want it to look. This setup is in my living room and is displayed on a 48inch / 1219.2mm TV. The Onkyo stereo is on my workbench waiting on me to replace the bad capacitors on the HDMI control board, a known issue with the 600 series Onkyos.
