I upgraded to 16.04 from 15.10 today and requested auto login, but it always requests password. I also used the system settings to set auto login, but it still requests password.

As reported elsewhere, using system settings to disable auto login and the re-enable it fixed the problem on Kubuntu.

This does NOT fix the issue for everyone.
I have done clean installs on 2 systems. If you set auto logon during install it works. If you do not and try the above it will not work.

What are the command line commands in 16.04 to enable auto logon so i can try that?

Reinstalling the OS should NOT be the only solution!

for those who still need to fix this, create a file (if it does not exist) in /etc called sddm.conf

in it add this:

[Autologin]
User=YourLogonID
Session=plasma.desktop

replacing YourLogonID with whatever user name you want to auto logon.

Almost a year after Nial's comment above, 16.04 is at LTS and yet this is STILL an issue for me. His suggestion worked, but caused another issue: my chosen resolution settings no longer stick. I go into Display Configuration, change it to my monitor's native resolution (1440x900) and click Apply, which works but it resets to 1024x768 upon reboot. This is all from within a VirtualBox 5.1.26 VM installed on Mac OS X 10.12.5. Is there a VM setting that might need tweaking? Any help to solve this extremely frustrating issue would be very much appreciated!
