Bug Description

When starting Calibre from the sidebar by clicking on it, the splash screen is shown (a picture of a shelf of books) and the text loading user interface is displayed. After this, the user interface is corrupted. Not only for Calibre, but for other parts of the system as well. For instance the comments when hovering over the icons of the sidebar are displayed permanently, even when moving to hover over another sidebar icon. When right-clicking the Calibre icon on the sidebar and selecting Exit, the user interface seems to function normal again

I get Calibre eating all of the RAM and then Xorg dies, screaming. I'm running On a 4.6.0rc5 kernel, to get AMDGPU working on my GPU since fglrx has gone the way of all things, hoping that that might improve matters. It doesn't improve the Calibre situation much though - not using Radeon, there's no longer a kernel error message.

I tried the following, inspired by one of the comments in another bug report. In a terminal I ran the following commands:

sudo rm -fr /opt/calibre
sudo rm -fr ~/.config/calibre

After that I manually removed calibre from the desktop starter bar.

After that I did an install from the Calibre website https://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux and ran the command headlined "binary install" in a terminal:

sudo -v && wget -nv -O- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/kovidgoyal/calibre/master/setup/linux-installer.py | sudo python -c "import sys; main=lambda:sys.stderr.write('Download failed\n'); exec(sys.stdin.read()); main()"

After that all seems fine now..

I don't think that deleting all of one's config counts as "solved".

I've worked around the problem by moving from Mate to KDE.

Hello Frans,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with Calibre. You made this bug report some time ago and Ubuntu and Calibre have been updated since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to this bug?
If you are, could you let us know and, in the current version, could you run the following (only once):
apport-collect 1562291
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu and Calibre better.
G
