Bug Description

Hello,

I'm running the latest beta of Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial on an ASUS UX303LA (Intel i5 6200U, Intel HD 520) and each time I plug a screen, using either HDMI or Mini DisplayPort, my laptop freezes after a few seconds.
Alt + Function keys doesn't work, sound stops and I'm forced to shutdown the computer by long-pressing its Power button.

I attached syslog, kern.log and Xorg.0.log for further information.

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.5 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I do not know if an update brought this issue because I did not plugged any monitors since I updated from wily.
I installed kernel 4.5 but the bug is still present. I wonder if the issue comes from Xorg instead of the kernel.

This problem IS specific to the new upgrade.

I myself just upgraded from 14.04 LTS to 16.04 LTS.

It worked fine prior to the upgrade.

I'm using an ASUS X555UB Laptop.

I did a clean install of the final Xenial release to rule out any faulty configuration files and the issue still happens.
Something to note is that when I boot with a second screen plugged in it does not freezes until I am on the desktop.

Same thing for me as well. It doesn't freeze until something is visually altered or clicked on the desktop. I've checked dmesg and syslog only to find no output of any error.

I have the same problem on my Levnovo T460s.
The same device worked with Ubuntu 15.10.

It is not always freezing, when I connect the HDMI, but approx. in 50% of the cases.
If I can help anything to support the analysis, let me know.

Hello guys,

I make a test of @blackeco: "I boot with a second screen plugged in it does not freezes" and at this situation does not freezes!

But If I boot and after boot I plug a HDMI cable the screen freeze.

To me it freezes even if I boot with the cable already plugged in. In this case, it will freeze when the login screen is displayed, sometimes I'm not even able to begin to type my password.

Having the same issue here, fresh 16.04 LTS install on Dell E7470 with i5-6300U.

As soon as I plug in HDMI the screen freezes. It does fine if I boot up with HDMI already plugged in.

I am using drivers from https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/graphics-drivers

Hi,

I have a Zenbook UX303UA running Ubuntu 16.04 (4.4.0-22-generic x86_64), fresh install and I have the same problem.

CASE 1:

If connect my Zenbook via HDMI to my Sony Bravia smart TV, the display shows up on the TV, but everything freezes. No keys work, cursor will not move, and must do a hard reboot.

CASE 2:

If I boot the laptop with the HDMI cable plugged in, then I have two displays and everything works just fine.

CASE 3:

If I remove the cable after CASE 2, things are still fine, but if I now plug it back in then the laptop crashes as in CASE 1.
