Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.5 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I think this bug exists from the beginning of this laptop existence.
I will check upstream kernel. I think it takes some time to fully understand is it works or not.
Thank you

Newer kernel definitely change many things (even cpu temperature decrees with same load - that looks strange).
But fan issue still present. No matter how high increase the temperature fan remain silent.

Additionally fan stops after suspend/resume.
When resume fan goes to maximum (sounds like that) then completely stops.

I have the same issue on my ES1-331 with Ubuntu 16.04.1. Both fancontrol and the thermal driver (/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device0/max_state) don't work. I need to reboot to get the fan works when it is overheat. That really bother me!

16.10 (Yakkety Yak). Still the same. Fan doesn't work.

No matter works fan or not the next states are same:
# cat /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device0/max_state
1
# cat /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device0/cur_state
1
# cat /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device0/type
Fan

If I turn acpi off fan doesn't work even after reboot. So acpi works, but incorrect.

There was a patch about acpi fan control last month. The original issue might got solved by it.

Although I don't know the ACPI drivers at all, I hope that these patches could be backport to the LTS release, but there's still no assignee on this bug...

After upgrading kernel to 4.4.0-57-generic via apt dist-upgrade, the fan seems work.
The fan starts working when the CPU temperature goes above 45'C, and stops when the CPU cool down.

Does anyone still having issues?

Seems that the patch on kernel 4.4 doesn't apply to kernel 4.8
