Bug Description

Binary package hint: dolphin

When I Ctrl+x a file on the desktop and then put it into any other folder on the file system it will show up there but the original file remains on the desktop - it never actually gets "moved" it gets copied!

this seems to be an official bug:

which won't be fixed:

Thanks for the bug-report! I know it has not been communicated very well, but bugs.kde.org for Dolphin is only valid for the KDE 4 version of Dolphin, the KDE 3 version is not maintained anymore (see also http://enzosworld.gmxhome.de/download.html section "Dolphin 0.8.2 (KDE 3.5.5)" for more infos). "

a filemanager with such a bug REALLY shouldn't the default?! this won't even get fixed so (AT LEAST) for hardy dolphin should really get 86'ed and find its way back in with kde4 with hardy+1 (iffy iguanodon?) ...

Thank you for your bug report. Your bug is valid - Konqueror won't remove the file when pasted into Dolphin. I would not be so quick to point at KDE3 Dolphin, though. It doesn't work vice versa either. In fact, you cannot even paste from Konqueror into Nautilus (the GTK file manager). Drag and Drop works fine.

Thank you Martin for your comment. Given that the dolphin team is currently working on that I think given the bug I do not think your reset to low priority is justified. It is a pretty serious thing when you can't even copy paste correctly don't you think? I'd appreciate your feedback.

The problem is that KDE3 Dolphin (the one you and me use) is not maintained anymore for quite some time - the original maintainer decided to drop it and work only on the KDE4 version. There were some attempts to revive it, but KDE3 Dolphin is, as of now, not maintained at all.
So, except for the Kubuntu Team, nobody cares about KDE3 Dolphin anymore. If we won't fix this bug ourselves, no-one will.

That's the current KDE3 Dolphin situtation. Now, let me get to the bug severity.
I have set it to "Low" because of several reasons:

a) There's no data loss involved and the bug can be easily worked around.
b) I am not yet certain that it is a bug directly in Dolphin code - it is a bug in Dolphin/Konqueror communication, of which I know only little.
c) If you drag and drop, the files will be moved correctly.

Don't worry, even a "Low" bug will be looked at - we just need to estimate the severity of the bugs so we can fix the worst ones first - application crashes, security vulnerabilities and data loss situations.

Thank you for your understanding.

It's a duplicate of bug #136695. For the severity, we think (I and the others that posted comments in bug described before) that it might be set to medium, because:
- a so evident bug cannot be in the default file manager and it could damage the trust in Ubuntu.
- if people thinks to move their files, but they are just coping them, this bug can be a security issue. We must keep in consideration that not so many people are able to use a shell session or even to change the default filemanager.

However, it is fixed in Dolphin-KDE4. So I set this bug as duplicate because it is proved that it's a bug of Dolphin. Hope this helps :)
