npm search causes massive resource usage, no output

Bug Description

$ npm search [packagename] causes no results to appear, massive use of cpu and memory.

In addition, npm has trouble installing some packages - namely electron-prebuilt. However, that might a problem with that package and not npm.

I have the same problem with $ npm search [packagename] on Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS
