Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

My upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy did not go all smoothly. My steps were:

1. In preparation for the upgrade, I uninstalled Pidgin and re-installed ubuntu-desktop (which contains Gaim, incompatible with Pidgin). All looked perfectly normal at this point.
2. For the first time, I tried via update-manager, "new version available" (or something similar) button.
3. Error message about 1/3 way through:

Could not install 'libpam0g'
The upgrade will continue but the 'libpam0g' package may be in a not working state. Please consider submitting a bugreport about it.
subprocess post-installation script killed by signal (Aborted), core dumped

4. The upgrade did indeed continue, but the following packages did run into problems:

All with the same error:
dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

5. Steps I took subsequently to resolve: I cleared the package archive, and reinstalled first libpam0g, and then all the others (the first via Synaptic / re-install, the others command line apt-get reinstall). I could then reboot and log in correctly. I have still some problems accessing a NTFS partition, but this may be unrelated (or not).

I will attach the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade once I figure out how to.

Thanks,

Chris

I'm experiencing this issue also. The upgrade is still running, and only libpam0g, libpam_modules and login have failed so far. Not sure how it's a duplicate of #134858, there's no mention of 'libpam0g' there.

This really does not seem to be a duplicate of #134858. It's clear that for that bug the package where the bug shows up is more or less random, whereas here it always start with libpam0g. My upgrade is still going, but the list of files that fail so far is identical to the posted. Race conditions should depend heavily on the particular hardware, thus will show up in different files, but this bug always start at libpam0g. I didn't have Pidgin, just the gnome-desktop. I have a few packages installed outside ubuntu (Codeweavers cross office, latest ATI binary drivers, ...), but it's mostly an up-to-date Feisty install.

@luis: I also have the latest ATI binary drivers installed.

Also other software (including non-free, like Opera and Skype) -- if the output of anything else is needed, I'll be happy to provide it. This is a Thinkpad T60.

(I have not had any more major problems once I got libpam0g and the rest reinstalled after the upgrade.)

"Me three" on this experience. Thanks for saving me a lot of typing, Chris. :~)

Though the upgrade so far seems to have worked (I had to leave the machine unattended again), I'm still a little nervous about a failure in authenticaton-related packages. I didn't reinstall libpam0g, but gdm logins and sudo are going fine.

BTW, if libpam0g was left in an unusable state last time I tried upgrading, it probably explains why I couldn't get out of screenlock on my first upgrade attempt. (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-screensaver/+bug/146412/comments/3)

(@Rog,Luis: The duplicate status seems wrong to me, too.)

Hope this is helping someone.
