Bug Description

After a gutsy fresh install, activating desktop effects automatically installs nvidia-glx-new in my system. Works fine.

Now I needed to install nvidia-settings to set up twinview, as I have a TV attached to the PC.

Using Applications>Add/Remove to install nvidia-settings quietly removes nvidia-glx-new and installs the older nvidia-glx which made my system boot in emergency mode (X bullet proof mode). I got no warning or anything when I installed nvidia-settings, everything just broke in the next reboot.

Possibly an nvidia-settings-new package is needed. Also I'm not sure how the tweakings done in nvidia-settings play with bulletproof X.

My solution was to get xorg.conf from my feisty installation (which had TwinView configure) and overwrite Gutsy's xorg.conf. But I know this is not a good long term solution, and I may be breaking something else with this.

Gutsy already comes with nvidia-settings.....you don't need do remove this package.
So, I try to configure two monitors, but I always got the error below:

[[
Failed to set MetaMode (1) 'CRT-0: nvidia-auto-select @1680x1050 +1280+0, DFP-0: 1280x800_60 @1280x800 +0+0' (Mode 2960x1050, id: 54) on X screen 0
Would you like to remove this MetaMode?
]]

I also cant configure the two monitors by the "Screens and Graphics" new tool.

Please, what's the solution for this problem?

I had to remove it because synaptics requested it, it has a conflict with nvidia-glx-new (the newest nvidia driver that Desktop-Effects uses). When installing nvidia-settings, the driver is silently reverted to nvidia-glx, which in turn made my machine enter into safe graphics mode.
