Bug Description

When entering text into the search bar at the top of the gnome-software application, the letters typed are doubled. In other words, if you enter, say, the letter "R", it the search bar will now contain "RR". Also, sometimes hitting the left arrow key in the search bar will delete both letters that were entered. Backspace does the same. The only way to get rid of the double letters is to try to navigate to the second letter and hit the delete key. Sometimes even that solution is inconsistent.

This was tested on Ubuntu MATE 16.04 Beta 1.

Thank you for your bug report, I can't confirm that and there is no other report of the issue ... do you have similar issues in other softwares?

This unfortunately is a known bug which is very hard to reproduce - sometimes it always happens, sometimes the issue vanishes.
Last time I had it, GNOME Software was the only application that was affected by this.
I linked the corresponding upstream bug.

Thanks for the quick reply. I completely understand regarding bugs that are hard to reproduce, being a software developer myself. I'm running the 16.04 beta on a VM, and the bug is happening every time I use the application. This is the only application that it happens in. I wonder if running in a VM has something to do with the frequency at which I am seeing the issue?

I had this bug after the upgrade to 16.04 (Ubuntu Gnome), and the bug was happening every time and only with this application. I fixed it changing the input method from xim to ibus, maybe this can be useful to solve the issue.

Unfortunately changing the input method (using im-config) to ibus was not successful for me.

Hi there,
I had just the same issue with Gnome Software as I installed UbuntuGnome 16.04 with a french keyboard (obsolete variant).

When I read the icarusminarus solution, I had changed the input keyboard with French variant (non obsolete) and then the GnomeSoftware just works like a charm.

Thanks you guys, hope this can help !

Badly, as I tested again the Gnome Software, the issue came back, even with the french variant keyboard.

Gnome Software 3.20.1

This seems to work for me: by using IM-config I changed the input method
from "ibus" to "none". So far so good...

My install is new (1 day) Ubuntu server 16.04 LTS 64-bit with the Gnome desktop added in as I hate to have to do all in command line. In my situation it is always reproducible and always effects me!

System:
HP wx9400 Work Station, water cooled
Quad-Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 2380 × 8 with 16 GiB memory
Dual display port Gallium 0.4 on NV92(nvidia)
WD 500 GiB and WD 1 Tetrabyte

Maybe go to Gnome Flashback as this desktop keeps bouncing things around moving the mouse, I have the real estate on a 20" monitor? I have not found the input method yet in this new Ubuntu?

This bug also affects me. Sometimes it happens in the GNOME Shell search. I suppose that duplicate happens when the content loads slowly and autocompletion is unable to finish immediately. Both X and Wayland sessions are affected.

I'm also affected by this bug.
Right after installation of Xubuntu 16.04 it was ok.
I've recognized this bug first time days after having installed additional languages / input methods. Maybe this is related?

Running Xubuntu 16.04. I recently installed Japanese language support, including Mozc and, as one user above also mentioned, IBUS. Subsequently going to Language Support and disabling IBUS or selecting another Keyboard input system has no effect on the bug, but it seems the bug was caused by the IBUS installation. It's pretty inconvenient, any solutions found?

It was working normally, but I did a clean install with Xubuntu 16.04.2 and realized that it is duplicating the letters. This way it is impossible to search.
