Bug Description

Starting the appearance propertie tool:

$ gnome-appearance-properties
 appearance-properties-WARNING **: Unknown Tag: comment
 appearance-properties-WARNING **: Unknown Tag: comment
 Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_map: assertion `GTK_WIDGET_VISIBLE (widget)' failed
 Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_map: assertion `GTK_WIDGET_VISIBLE (widget)' failed

Everything looks ok but when you trie to use the dialog, you notice that the the whole thing is dead.

Further investigation:

- A newly created user does not have this issue. The Gtk-Critical lines are missing.

This could have something to do with following (not that uncommon operations):

- I moved away the picture used as wallpaper without replacing it before. Moving it back does not solve the issue.
- I installed the package 'hildon-theme-mobile-basic'. Removing it again did not solve this issue.

Back in the Fiesty days, I had the same problem twice and had to remove my homedir and create it again. When this dialog was splited into several programs - but it seems like the merge did merge all bugs too.

I do not want to replace all my settings again!

If there is no fix at the moment, could someone tell me how to wipe the right settings so it starts working again. Is there any cache of themes?

Even more:

$ strace -e trace=open gnome-appearance-properties

...

open("/usr/share/themes/Mist/gtk-2.0/gtkrc", O_RDONLY) = 35
open("/usr/share/themes/Qt/gtk-2.0/gtkrc", O_RDONLY) = 36

(gnome-appearance-properties:17171): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_map: assertion `GTK_WIDGET_VISIBLE (widget)' failed
open("/usr/share/themes/Redmond/gtk-2.0/gtkrc", O_RDONLY) = 37

(gnome-appearance-properties:17171): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_map: assertion `GTK_WIDGET_VISIBLE (widget)' failed
open("/usr/share/themes/LowContrast/gtk-2.0/gtkrc", O_RDONLY) = 38
--- SIGCHLD (Child exited) @ 0 (0) ---
(I breaked)

Removing the file '/usr/share/themes/Qt/gtk-2.0/gtkrc' solved the issue! I have no idea how this will affect my QT programs.

I can confirm. Since today gnome-appearance-properties freezes in gutsy. Don't know why it does that suddenly. Worked before. Did not update anything vital.

Had this happen to me shortly after installing Gutsy-beta fresh. Workaround was to remove the gtk-qt-engine package.

This workaround works for me too.

There are a few possibly related bugs on the gtk-qt-engine package, e.g. bug 145827

I am also affected by this bug.
However, gtk-qt-engine isn't even installed on my system, so the source of the problem must be somewhere else...

Runnning gnome-appearance-porperties in a terminal shows:
(gnome-appearance-properties:12201): appearance-properties-WARNING **: Unknown Tag: comment

The program itself is completely unresponsive.
