Bug Description

Installed from Gutsy release Live CD using the following procedure to work around the initramfs problem:

% live-nosplash-powerpc break=premount
...
(initramfs) modprobe ide_core
(initramfs) exit

The live CD then boots with errors about Bonobo and date set to 1904.
Ran the installer successfully.

Reboot, got to yaboot, selected 'Linux'. Final message is "Loading, please wait."

After that the screen slowly changed colors to various blues and then faded to white. At this point the machine is non-responsive and I cannot get to virtual terminals.

Attempt to boot to single-user mode produced the same result.

Ideas or steps for further diagnosis?

I have seen that effect (screen colours slowly changing) on the machine. i get it with the gutsy live cd, so i did an install with the feisty cd and upgraded (using the ide_core and killall esd work arounds).

When booting the live cd 'hardy haron alpha 4' on an powerbook g3 without options, I get a small bar showing variuous blues and fading to white. When using the option video=ofonly, this problem goes away, but then I'm dropped in to a shell (probably because of ide_core not loaded). Then I tried

% live-nosplash-powerpc break=premount video=ofonly
...
(initramfs) modprobe ide_core
(initramfs) exit

but it seems that the cd-rom doesn't get mounted :( .

I tried the same also on a desktop imac g3 (a little blue imac) . But then I get an even worse situation: the usb-driver for the keyboard doesn't work, probably because of the "premount=break" option (the keyboard works in the initramfs-shell when leaving that option away).

I think everything really got messed up for G3 (check all my bug reports), even though I got better (not perfect) experience with previous releases. :(
