Bug Description
1. Boot Gutsy LiveCD
2. Select "Placess::Connect to server..."
3. Select service "Windows share", enter LAN ip of a Windows machine and enter the name of an existing non-password protected network share on that machine.
4. Ubuntu creates a shortcut on the desktop, click it.
5. Ubuntu asks for username/password even though the network share is non-password protected.
6. No profit.
I don't know how the low levels of SAMBA work, but this kind of thing typically just work out of the box for Windows to Windows networking and it needs to work out of the box for Ubuntu to Windows networking too.

I suppose that what I really want is:
1. The password dialog should have two distinct options, first one is "use guest account" and the second it "specify a user/pass manually". If someone selects the "use guest account" option and a permission denied is issued back to ubuntu; then ubuntu shall show a special error message that says:
maybe the "guest" account is not enabled on the target machine?
I mean, this is not technically super beautiful because "guest" account is not really special. but it would be a HUGE win for overall usability of ubuntu. It would be a workaround that falls in the same category as these other workarounds:
* how apt-get says "are you root?" because so many people are trying to install without having root access
* nano says "mumble mumble" when you press CTRL-S
