Bug Description

I have Ubuntu 15.10 installed, and all was working fine. Then I accepted some software updates and my mouse pointer no longer appears. If I plug in an external USB mouse then all is fine, but I want to use the touchpad - it was working, doesn't now.

cat /proc/bus/input/devices gives me output that includes ...

I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0002 Product=000e Version=0000
N: Name="ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad"
P: Phys=isa0060/serio4/input0
S: Sysfs=/devices/platform/i8042/serio4/input/input12
U: Uniq=
H: Handlers=mouse0 event5
B: PROP=5
B: EV=b
B: KEY=e420 10000 0 0 0 0
B: ABS=661800011000003

I did find a couple of bug reports for the UX305CA and tried installing the following debs downloaded from http://www.godisbeautiful.net/4.4rc8deb/, but it didn't fix the problem

linux-firmware-image-4.4.0-rc8-touchpad_4.4.0-rc8-touchpad-1_amd64.deb
linux-headers-4.4.0-rc8-touchpad_4.4.0-rc8-touchpad-1_amd64.deb
linux-image-4.4.0-rc8-touchpad_4.4.0-rc8-touchpad-1_amd64.deb
linux-image-4.4.0-rc8-touchpad-dbg_4.4.0-rc8-touchpad-1_amd64.deb
linux-libc-dev_4.4.0-rc8-touchpad-1_amd64.deb

Booting the previous versions of the kernel didn't help. I also tried editing /etc/default/grub to change this line ...

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i8042.reset quiet splash"

... and then ran update-grub and reboot, but it didn't make any difference.

Help?

Just found a fix for this ...

In System Settings->Mouse & Touchpad, the Touchpad slider was set to off.

Moving the Touchpad slider to on fixed the problem.

So this is NOT a linux kernel problem, but I think this must have been some sort of upgrade problem - maybe that slider is new and defaults to off - I don't know.

Please triage appropriately - I think there is a bug in that maybe it defaulted/set the slider to off.

Thanks,

Barnabear.
