Uname: Linux Davros 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 23:05:12 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux
UnreportableReason: This is not a genuine Ubuntu package
I discovered this same issue with my Ubuntu 7.10
I discovered that no repositories at all were selected under System > Administration > Software Sources. When I selected the appropriate repositories here, this problem with Totem / Movie Player was resolved.
I believe my problem was caused by my internet connection being down when I installed Ubuntu. See my bug: Bug #155165 Software Sources ALL unselected, if no internet on Ubuntu 7.10 install
By any chance, were your install circumstances the same as mine?
