Bug Description

Binary package hint: kpowersave

Since last reboot (after installation from CD) I'm not getting the friendly icon in the systray showing the CPU frequency, the battery level and so on.
Also when I reboot or halt the system I can only terminate rthe session, turn of or restart. With no other option.
kpowersave -v says:
Qt: 3.3.7
KDE: 3.5.8
KPowersave: 0.7.2 (unstable)

while kpowersave --force-acpi-check says:

kpowersave --force-acpi-check
This machine does not support ACPI, APM, PMU, CPUFreq, Suspend2Disk norSuspend2RAM. Close KPowersave now.
ERROR: Communication problem with kpowersave, it probably crashed.

I suspect a buggy compilation.

How can I if Adept is telling me that 0.7.2-3ubuntu1 is the latest?

Maybe things now are clearer.
During the boot, the hald doesn't start and I have no clue why also because the hal entry in the systes services has the "ron on boot" flag on but is also said not to be running.
I dcan start it manually with

sudo /etc/init.d/hal start

I can see the hald process in the process table now.
The system services still says it's not running but the kpowersave icon is not geyed anymore and shown more details like the CPU frequency, but not the battery status.
If hald is not running, the kpowersave icon in tghe tay is geyed not showing anything useful.
I have reinstalled hal and double checked not only the "system services" list and flags, but also the entries in /etc/rc?.d .
The problem still remains.

Gotcha!
I have found this bug report:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/155850

I also was using the "CONCURRENCY=shell" in /etc/init.d/rc script.
By disabling it I have got back in my tray the battery icon, the KNetworkManager online icon and the kpowersave icon.
And i also have got the "auto mount" feature in KDE for newly inserted media.

In my opinion the CONCURRENCY flag management in /etc/init.d/rc is either to be fixed or to be disabled until
a fix is committed.

Please close this bug.
