package supervisor 3.2.0-2: Post-installation start action fails

After installing the deb for supervisor 3.2.0 (found here https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/supervisor_3.2.0-2_all.deb) I get this error with any apt operation:

Setting up supervisor (3.2.0-2) ...
Starting supervisor: invoke-rc.d: initscript supervisor, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing package supervisor (--configure):
 subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 supervisor
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

As far as I can tell, the supervisor service is indeed started afterwards, but the post installation script continues to fail, causing any apt operation to produce the above error and exit with non-zero status.
