The last kernel version that did work is 3.19.0-23-generic #24~14.04.1, which was pre-installed on the new computer.

After updating to a more recent kernel the wi-fi stops working. I made it work again by re-installing the original system through system recovery option.

I will now run the software updater again and post the logs as required in answer #3 above from my other computer.

In the non-working case the iwlwifi module isn't loaded, which is obviously a problem. Can you provide the output from the following commands when wifi isn't working? Does wifi work after these commands?

$ modprobe --show-depends pci:v00008086d00003165sv00008086sd00004410bc02sc80i00
$ sudo modprobe -v pci:v00008086d00003165sv00008086sd00004410bc02sc80i0

At this point I'm not seeing any obvious differences between the two kernel versions which would account for the regression.

These are not the modules that shipped with the kernel. It looks to me like something that was added for hardware enablement.

I'm not sure what package this affects, but it doesn't look like it's the kernel. Someone from the Canonical hardware enablement team needs to look into it.
