Border around maximized windows

Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-themes

The themes seem to have gotten a thin border even when maximized. Not only is this border almost invisible and completely useless, it also destroys the usability benefits (see Fitt's Law) of placing widgets at the borders (usually scrollbars, but also stuff like the panel toggle in opera).

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems. http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

I upgraded feisty to gutsy.

I expected there to be no side borders (and hoped there would be no bottom border) on maximized windows.

I encountered ~2 pixel wide borders on the left and on the right (and apparently also on the bottom) of a maximized window.

I just disabled and re-enabled the desktop effects and now the metacity themes don't have a left border on maximized windows! There still seems to be a 1-pixel border on the right border, though.
(Also, all gtk themes using the smooth engine seems to have a border for maximized windows hardcoded into them. At least I can't find any parameters that would affect the border when I try to modify existing themes' gtkrc files.)

No, I was wrong, there is no right border either. Great!
Now only the smooth engine makes unwanted borders. Any idea where that should be reported?
