installer hangs at "Configuring apt" while installing from Hoary release CD

Perfectly normal installation until the "Configuring apt... " step. Goes to 25%
fast and the blue screen freezes there,"Setting up primary installation
repository...". Network connection on motherboard up and running, the computer
answers ping, connection to ISP runs on other machine on the LAN. Virtual
consoles works.

The CD confirmes to it's md5sum.txt file.

The same machine made a proper install of a hoary pre-release from February.

Now I've tried with the x86 hoary distribution also on the same machine, it
stops at the same step in the installation.
