firefox hangs without certain packages

Bug Description

Binary package hint: mozilla-firefox

Adobe Flash causes firefox to hang on certain websites consistantly without these packages installed:
flashplugin-nonfree
gnash
gnash-common
mozilla-plugin-gnash

Have flash installed via nsplugginwrapper, did this on 7.04 (using 64bit ubuntu) before upgrading to gutsy. installing the previous packages fixes the crashes, however clearly something (plugin finder?) is not functioning properly.

Any suggestions for narrowing down the problem? i dont know if this is the ubuntu plugin or what, but i want to explore this a little more before reporting upstream in the bugzilla

I had the exact same problem and I could fix it just as the description says.

I think it should be noted that in order to find and install all of those packages, universe and multiverse repositories should be added, perhaps restricted too.
I know it's a silly detail but it might help someone.

As to narrowing down the problem. It happened to me because I got the flash player to work on Ubuntu 7.04 in a way that was not compatible with ubuntu 7.10

Okay, turns out you only need to install the flashplugin-nonfree package to fix this, installing gnash is unneccessary. The issue is, as stated above, probably having flash installed before hand on 7.04 with nsplugin wrapper. i used the nspluginwrapper install script by kilz, over in ubuntu forums. Small bug but one that has affected many, as indicated by the number of replies to my thread describing the fix (again, ubuntuforums)

You only need to install either flashplugin-nonfree or Mozilla-plugin-gnash to get flash to work on webpage. The other gnash package "gnash" are standalone player that brings in gnash-common as a depend.
This is happening becuase firefox is looking for a plugin when you open a flash embedded site (example: YouTube)
The flash plugin-finder is garbage and never worked we are looking to disable this in future releases but we need to find out how Mozilla and Flash feel about this.
Can you please make sure this happens ONLY on flash pages. If you are not sure please give us the link and we will let you know if its flash or not.

Also can you test with Firefox-3.0 if you are using Hardy to see if this is still happening?

I'm sorry, I had this fixed Ages ago..
do you want me to try and replicate the bug conditions on another computer?

I have hardy now, with Firefox 3.0 b5 and this isn't happening any more.

mooglinux, Are you able to test this on a brand new profile by following the instructions at: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs

Gabriel,
What dod you do to fix this? Just install flash and or gnash plugins? Please lists the steps you used to fix it I have a feeling this is a profile bug.

Why i say that is because you used 2.0 and than started using 3.0 and the plugins were only installed in 2.0 so you would have to move/copy them or just have to install them for 3.9 since it is now default in Hardy and the bug i stated above was fixed a bit ago, on 3.0 side. So please let me know as much as you can.

Thanks,
John Vivirito.

As the bug description says, I had only to install me theese packages:

   - flashplugin-nonfree
   - gnash
   - gnash-common
   - mozilla-plugin-gnash

At the moment I Also had flash working on 7.04 and then upgraded to 7.10
And I also have a 64bit machine (and use/d 64bit Ubuntu)

I hope this helps. If it doesn't, please, let me know.
