Bug Description

I just download 16.04 server, the 2016-01-11 build and installed it on Virtual Box 5.0.14.

The problem I got was with the keyboard mapping in the password setting dialogue. When characters is not mapped correctly login is blocked.

The preferred language was set to English, but I did set the keyboard map as Swedish (from list) during installation.

During installation and in the user password setting dialogue,
characters are mapped correctly what I can see (enabled with 'show password').

But at login keyboard is still American English.

The character I have in the password is '*', which gives '\' with the Swedish key marked '*'.

I have compared this with Debian jessie installer (and wheezy, and earlier) and it has never been a problem what I can remember, only on ubuntu.

I just installed Ubuntu 16.04 on my Macbook Pro (2015), using an external USB3 SSD, I'm seeing this problem, keyboard map is completely wrong.

I installed it with "English" plus "English - International with AltGr", none worked!

Then, I plugged in my Razer English USB keyboard and it worked! While the main Macbook keyboard remains wrong on Ubuntu.

K-B (debinix), yes, Debian Jessie is fine but, Ubuntu isn't Debian, it is based on it. Debian have lots of problems as well, that Ubuntu doesn't, so, your comment is meaningless, sorry.

Do you guys think that this bug report belongs to "debian-installed"?

I can login as expected, because my initial password is very simple, so, the problem might be in a different package.

Thoughts?

Hi Thiago,
sorry if my comment about Debian upset anyone, it was intended as as guidance that the Debian installer does not have this issue which could be helpful to find the problem - nothing more.

I have this issue (or something similar). I upgraded from LTS (16.04?) to 17.04 and now my log-in screen and console are both UK keyboard layout rather than US layout. I am in the UK, but it seems unlikely that it would choose a layout based on location.
The only options on the login screen for keyboard layout at 'English (US)' and 'Chinese', so I don't know why it is choosing English/UK.
It is a problem because my password contains a '#', which is shift-3 on US-layout and the '\' key when using UK layout with a US keyboard.
Once I log in, then it is US as intended.

I believe we've fixed this already, especially since it is a bug that was reported prior to the release of 16.04. We do have developers who routinely use dvorak for keymap and would otherwise not have been able to login to their systems.

Reassigning to console-setup, since it is the most likely culprit; but I think it would be best if this was re-tested on recent releases and images, and if someone is still seeing this problem show up, to report it again here.

For now, I'm setting this to incomplete. I believe it has been properly addressed (I made substancial changes to keyboard selection myself between this report and the release of 16.04, and in further releases). Please let us know if it isn't the case :)
