Bug Description

I had the "pre-released updates" box checked in my software updates. When I did an update yesterday and rebooted, I lost wired/wireless networking and Network Manager wouldn't start. When accessing System Settings->Network, I get "The system network services are not compatible with this version". I couldn't roll back the update with synaptic because I had no network access, so I had to download 3 files (libnl-3-200_3.2.21-1_amd64.deb libnl-genl-3-200_3.2.21-1_amd64.deb libnl-route-3-200_3.2.21-1_amd64.deb) from http://packages.ubuntu.com/source/trusty/libnl3 on another computer and transfer them via flashdrive then run "sudo dpkg -i *.deb" on the files. After that all was normal. I posted a forum message at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2311705 about this.

I've been able to duplicate this on two different computers. Allowing "pre-released updates" to update these three libnl packages breaks networking.

Yesterday night (thursday 28 jan 2016) I had the same trouble, so now I am without net. Running from other SO.

Same here, on 14.04, also with preleased updates enabled. When I started today (after the updates last night) no network at all (wired, also tried to plug a USB wifi dongle without results).
After searching on the internet I found the workaround mentioned here, which I applied, solving (for now) the problem.

Now time to see how to get back to a clean situation.

Hello,

  Same here on Bio-Linux 8 (Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS) AMD64.

To get networking back, you'll have to downgrade two packages. Find another machine, download these debs from launchpad. Copy to affected machine, and install:

$sudo dpkg -i libnl-3-200_3.2.21-1_amd64.deb libnl-route-3-200_3.2.21-1_amd64.deb

$sudo reboot

You should now have working network.

Andor
