Gutsy boot failure

Bug #153952 reported by Stefan Nilsson

Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
xserver-xorg-video-nv (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

Gutsy boot process stops at "Kernel Alive" message with no further video output.
Booting in recovery mode is possible. dpkg-reconfigure does not recognize monitor.
Manually assigning refresh rates doesn't solve problem. Changing graphics driver
from nv to vesa makes it possible to boot (with incorrect screen resolution).

I've had to manual set the refresh rates for the last 4-5 Gutsy kernels. However,
it's only with the last update that the driver (Nvidia propriatary with GeForce
8500GT) fails completely.

Please attach your X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the "Attachment:" box below. Could you please also try to run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf and let Xorg autodetect your display and video card? Please also attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt. Thanks in advance.

I did keep a copy of the xorg.conf. I'll attach that right away.
Unfortunetely the log file is no longer there since I've booted
I few times in between.

I'll get back to you with conf- and log-files from booting without
xorg.conf in a moment. (Assuming that I manage to get my video
back up after the experiment :)

Here is the log file after rebooting without xorg.conf.
It did get me back to a working video device after 10 minutes
of disk activity and no splash screen. fsck perhaps.
No xorg.conf file was created in /etc/X11/.

Moi Timo!

I tried the amd64 Hardy alpha3 livecd and did get a Ubuntu splash
screen and menu. However, during most of the boot sequence I had
no video signal. The machine did boot, however, and the screen
resolution was correct (1920x1200x32).

I also tried the "F4: 1920x1200x32" option: still no video out.

Even in "Safe graphics mode" I had no video signal during the boot.
(In this case the screen resolution was set to 1600x1200, which I
assume is as expected.)

Best regards,

Stefan

In other words, you don't have the usplash screen when the computer boots up, X works. Have you tried the 32bit version?

I believe that's a correct description. The 32-bit version does
work as expected. Also, in the 64-bit version no usplash screen
is shown when shutting down. (I didn't know that was supposed
to happen until I tried 32 bit.:)
