Bug Description

Binary package hint: pidgin

Switching between conversation tabs seems to take longer than it should. Normally about 5 seconds or so. When switching between tabs, it spikes the CPU until it switches tabs.
I'm running ubuntu 7.10 on a Dell GX270 with a 3.2Ghz Pentium 4 with 2GB of Ram.
Compiz Fusion is enabled.
Both Conversations are gtalk.

This seems to have been caused by a corrupt profile. I deleted my .purple directory out of my home directory and now it works fine. This can be closed.

I've been seeing this lately. I'd rather not have to delete my pidgin config...

BTW: I think it has to do with the pidgin/evolution contact integration because evo may pause for a while, too. When I straced, I noticed during the UI pause that there's some work being done through /tmp/orbit-burner.

BTW: still seeing it in hardy.

I'm using hardy as well and I'm finding tab switching slow (or opening another tab) in Pidgin too. Not 5 seconds slow...more like 1-2 seconds slow. Non-the-less...very annoying. I'm using a mix of gtalk and MSN. I do not have the 'Evolution Integration" plugin enabled. I really don't want to delete my .purple directory either...

Any other solutions?

Can confirm.... When the Evo integration is enabled, takes about 10 seconds in between tabs. Once disabled, it's instantaneous.

I can confirm this too. When I disabled evolution integration plugin in Pidgin, then switching or opening tabs with google talk converstaion forks fine again. I use ICQ and Jabber (Google Talk).

At first I thought this was a bug in Pidgin's MSN implementation, but it seems the Evolution integration causes this.

Has anyone seen if the plug-in is to blame or E-D-S?

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10?

I have this issue in Ubuntu 9.04. The problem is related to gnome integration since I don't have performance problems in other environment such as xfce4. I've disabled all evolution services and the gnome applet for notifying IM's events.

Does someone still having problems?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. If you could test the current Ubuntu development version, this would help us a lot. If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #>, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Tested with latest version of Pidgin 2.6.6 on an Ubuntu 9.10 machine.

I have not had this problem in quite some time. It is not happening for me with 10.04. I think this can probably be closed.

Still happens in 10.04. If I enable the evolution plugin, it takes some seconds to switch tabs.

For what it is worth, I fixed my slow Pidgin by disabling the "Switch Spell" plugin in Pidgin.
