Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution

Evolution's main window has no window decorations under Gutsy. This started today. All it's child windows and every other program seems unaffected. Can't move main window and tries to keep itself on top.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" [WWW] http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems. [WWW] http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

We would need the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem. This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

Thank you!

It's pretty simple actually. I run evolution (exchange mode), the main window with the folders has no title bar, scroll bars, etc.

The program functions, but I can't move, resize, or close the window using the standard window buttons.

I generated an strace.log and CAMEL_DEBUG file but it's loaded with personal info so I won't post it here but could e-mail it to you if you want to see that.

I just tried doing a complete re-install of all the evolution modules and it doesn't do anything. However, disabling compiz fixes the problem in evolution. However, like I said previously, all the other applications are running correctly under compiz (as was evolution until today).

Purged evolution. Turned off various window plugins in compiz. Restarted evolution. No title bars. Restart Compiz. Title bars. Turned back on plugins. Evolution back to normal. Very strange.

Thanks for the report, does it happens only with Visual Effects enabled? did you try the same without them?

That is correct. No compiz, title bars appeared. Seems fine now, though. The problem survived multiple reboots so I think something in compiz got confused about where the screen started and ended. Only affected evolution though...

Thank you for the update. Shall I understand the bug is closed or does the problem presist when Compiz is activated?

Note: Since the bug report seems to be on Compiz package instead of Evolution, I will add "Compiz" in the bug title so users/developpers will find it easily in future.

Please try if disabling the "Legacy Fullscreen Support" option in the compiz workaround plugin fixes this. You may have to install the compizconfig-settings-manager and start the settings-manager with "ccsm".

That fixed it. I was still suffering from a random window without borders. Thanks much.

Sure reads like the same thing. I originally had issues with evolution, but this "migrated" to other apps.

I confirm that it happened to me also. All of the sudden Evolution windows opened to read an e-mail (no other type), don't have the decoration under Gutsy (the title bar). All other windows in Evolution have title bar. In fact this bar exists but it is totally transparent. It reacts to mouse events. I can use close, minimize, maximize buttons that, in fact I can not see at all, but I am trying to guess where they are trying to "touch" them with the mouse cursor like blind people. I specify that I am using compiz (Visual Effects custom plug-ins), I did not make any changes related to Evolution or Compiz meanwhile and the bug is persistent from one run to another. This means there are persistent state variables that influence this behavior into Compiz or into Evolution or a combinations of these two. Where is the bug? Is it in Compiz. Who knows?

I had this too, upgraded from Feisty to Gutsy and had the latest version of Compiz-Fusion.
First time and every subsequent time I started evolution, while running compiz, it lacked window decorations.
It worked fine when I did metacity --replace but not with compiz.
However turning off the "Legacy Fullscreen Support" option in the compiz workaround plugin fixed it using compizconfig-settings-manager
