Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

Upgrading from 7.04 to 7.10 kubuntu with update-manager -d lets
python-apt_0.7.31ubuntu3 fail.

After that many packages can't be upgraded -
including update-manager-core, update-manager, update-manager-notifier .....

Finally the system was removing update-manager itself, which lead the update to crash.
After a reboot I was able to continue with
aptitude dist-upgrade / dpkg --configure -a.

The systems seems to be fine now, but I don't have any consoles (tty1....12) only the graphical interface on tty7 is up'n'running.

Has there been a change in that during system upgrade or is the lacking console part of the python problem and the update wasn't finished correctly?

System is
Linux shihan.home.aiki-it.de 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Wed Oct 10 06:00:47 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please add the log files from '/var/log/dist-upgrade/' to this bugreport as attachments to your bug report? Thanks in advance.

I hope the files contain information about the dist-upgrade because I ran several aptitude dist-upgrades after the major upgrades.
Thanks for your help.

Since things have not evolved I checked my log dir and found maybe other useful stuff.

I don't have any terminals right now, which is not very satisfying.

Attached you'll find /var/log/installer

The tty-problem was solved as described here - http://x4.6times7.org/dokuwiki/doku.php/devlog/blog/no_tty_1-6_in_ubuntu_7.10

Edit /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and add the lines (modules)
fbcon
vesafb

Uncomment vesafb in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer, so the line should look like
# blacklist vesafb

update-initramfs -u

reboot and the console is visible again.

Other stuff still not resolved ..... maybe this bug should be closed as couldn't reproduce?
I hope that the update to 8.04 is getting as smooth as before.
