i'm using a daily updated gutsy system.

launching nm-vpn-properties from the 'applications-
the nm-openvpn.desktop file seems correctly configured; in fact it reports this entry:
Exec=/usr/
but opening the link properties from 'system-
nm-vpn-properties --import-service org.freedesktop

Which package provides that? I have no such thing in my menus?

Mine doesn't. Please right click the menu entry and select "Revert to
original" and see if that fixes anything for you.
