Bug Description
I uninstalled the old vmware tools and did `sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools`. After a reboot, `modprobe vmhgfs` fails with `modprobe: FATAL: Module vmhgfs not found.`. Mounting also fails: `mount -t vmhgfs .host:/ /mnt/hgfs/` fails with `Error: cannot mount filesystem: No such device` (/mnt/hgfs was previously created as a plain empty directory).
Installing open-vm-dkms and open-vm-tools-dkms does not help.
I'm running Trusty Tahr (Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS) in the server (no-GUI) configuration, and kernel version "3.16.0-57-generic #77~14.
Shared folder support is, in short, completely broken right now on trusty. Based on the file list and the apt-get install process, it doesn't even look like it's attempting to build a kernel driver (I have the necessary headers, along with build-essentials installed).
