Note - shadows must be enabled in window decoration plugin
1. Open a window, say Firefox, on workspace 1
2. Maximize the window

This bug was nominated for Gutsy but does currently not qualify for a 7.10 stable release update (SRU) and the nomination is therefore declined. According the the SRU policy, the fix should already be deployed and tested in the current development version before an update to the stable releases will be considered. With 7.10 now released, that policy applies to this bug. See: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates .

The bug is not being closed as work will continue on fixing it for the next release, Hardy Heron (8.04). To help improve the state of this bug see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/HowToTriage and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures .

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and make Ubuntu better. I can confirm that maximized windows in Ubuntu Jaunty will still cast a shadow onto other workspaces. I believe this bug has enough information for a developer to begin work, so I will set this as Triaged and let them take it from here.

Temporary workaround (needs compizconfig-settings-manager):
Open CompizConfig and click the Window Decoration button. `Shadow windows' should be `any'. Replace it with
`any & !(state=maxvert)'. This solved the problem for me.
(I'm using Debian squeeze 6.0.6, but this should still work for Ubuntu.)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug. The compiz program that we currently use in Ubuntu is a C++ re-write of the original compiz and was announced the 4th July 2010. Therefore, the bugs that were reported before that date, will be marked as "Won't Fix" as they probably exist in the original program which is not stored in launchpad. (The last LTS that used the old compiz is the 10.04 which is not supported anymore).

Changed in compiz (Ubuntu):
status: Triaged → Won't Fix
no longer affects: compiz
