Bug Description

I have a Lenovo U31-70 that I recently purchased and installed Ubuntu 15.10 onto, after removing Windows 10. Out of the box, wifi on Ubuntu did not work- but with the solution decrbed it post #74 of bug #1436940.
This solution use file from https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/backports/2015/09/03/backports-20150903.tar.gz
and
https://github.com/atondwal/ath10k-firmware.git
After doing this the wifi (and my ability to connect to secured networks I had the password for) worked perfectly.
The last day I used the laptops wifi and it worked was the 13th of December.
I did not try to use it again until the 16th . I had selected all updates to be done.
Then on the 16th when I did try to use it, I had the problem that I could see wifi networks and their details, but the buttons in network-manager-gnome (save, connect) are “grayed out” and do not permit me to click on them…

I have tried reinstalling Ubuntu 15.10 (from the original thumb-drive) and applying the back port, I still could not click connect.
I have purged and reinstalled network-manager-gnome, did not work.
Have done update and dist-upgrade.
The things that other 15.10 users could do to get network-manager-gnome to work for them had no effect for me, and I am wondering if my back ports and atheros could be the reason?

Here is the output of the wireless script, I'm not really used to Ubuntu and don't know about networking-
so if it turns out there's an obvious reason for this, sorry.

As another bit of info, I just tried to connect with wicd network manager, and it can see the networks and save the passwords- but when told to connect, it'll spend a long time saying “authenticating password” and then just stop and say bad password. I checked with my wifi, so I know I gave the right encryption and password.

Ana Noriega, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.

The first step here would be identify the combination of upstream kernel and firmware that works for your hardware.

If you use an updated version of the kernel backport and firmware, is this issue addressed?

Between now and when I made this report, I did a reinstall of 15.10 with ethernet and multiple sudo upgrades/updates and replaced the old backport with what I wwas told was the latest ath-10k backport, backports-4.3-1.
thread here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2306882

Hasn’t worked yet, in fact I can't detect wifi with backports-4.3.1

Ana Noriega, well you got some bad information, as the upstream maintainers git repository is found at:
https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-firmware

This is confirmed as per upstream https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/ath10k/firmware .

I just tried
sudo cp '/home/ana/Downloads/firmware-4.bin_WLAN.RM.2.0-00180-QCARMSWPZ-1' /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/firmware-2.bin
sudo reboot

with
 ath10k-firmware/QCA6174/hw3.0/firmware-4.bin_WLAN.RM.2.0-00180-QCARMSWPZ-1

and I don't notice a difference, did I try the right firmware and commands?

Ana Noriega, to clarify https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1527950/comments/21 , the way it's presented is most confusing. Could you please just post what was executed via the terminal, versus making a discussion of what you typed?

Despite this, one would want to ensure they test the latest firmware, with the latest mainline kernel (now 4.5-rc1). Could you please advise?

You need the firmware from /QCA6174/hw2.1 for your card

The firmware in /QCA6174/hw3.0 is used by the [168c:003e] (rev 32)

I would remove the existing ath10k-firmware from your home folder

rm -rf ath10k-firmware

Then download the newer one

git clone https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-firmware.git

Remove the existing firmware

sudo rm -r /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw2.1

Then copy from the new version

sudo cp -r ath10k-firmware/QCA6174/hw2.1 /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/

Then rename the firmware file, next command may span two lines

sudo cp /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw2.1/firmware-5.bin_SW_RM.1.1.1-00157-QCARMSWPZ-1 /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw2.1/firmware-5.bin

Reboot and see if the firmware crashes

Since the backports will not use board-2.bin we will rename it to board.bin. board-2.bin was added in the last month, may span 2 lines

sudo mv /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw2.1/board.bin /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw2.1/board.bin.bak

sudo mv /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw2.1/board-2.bin /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw2.1/board.bin

Reboot
