cant connect to eduroam vpn-wifi on 15.10

Bug Description

Windows on the same machine and android smartphone can connect with same username and password without issues.

Tried several certificates (to rule out changes on certificates form the last setting 10months ago when it worked on the same ubuntu install).

It connects to the wifi (eduroam) but cant auth to the vpn. recieve a popup which prompts me the username and password.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1241930 this seems to be ths root of this issue: wpa_suplicant since version 2.4 doesnt work with the older software still used by most infrastructure.
