after fresh install with encrypted lvm system refuses to get past grub

system loads grub and allows menu selection, but then goes to a blank screen with cursor and no password prompt

A good way to test if it is in fact a duplicate seems to be using the arrow keys when you see the blank screen.

Indeed, press alt + left/right arrow to cycle through the ttys and see if you come across the password prompt.
