Bug Description

Binary package hint: adept

This is just a wishlist. I would like it if the adept updater would minimize to the tray when you closed it if it is installing or updating software. All of my favorite kde applications minimize to the tray and I have come to love it. Last week I used iTunes for the first time in a year, and was shocked to realize that it doesn't do this... so you see I have become very used to apps using the system tray. Adept seems like it should also work this way.

Sounds like you haven't found the usefulness of virtual desktops yet :)

Lol, I love virtual desktops! (I have been using linux exclusively for almost a year now, I know how they work :)

Anyway, as I said, its what I've gotten myself used to, with so many nice apps nicely minimizing to the tray. Furthermore, a package manager shouldn't be interrupted-- even if it is closed, if its installing stuff it should still work. Apt may be intelligent enough to handle being interrupted*, but still, its a bad idea.

*Actually, apt doesn't really handle that correctly, does it?

I'm marking this bug report as Invalid, but please feel free to reopen it with new ideas. The basic problem with the feature request is that Adept Update and the system tray icon are actually two different applications. The system tray icon is actually Adept Notifier, which always runs in the background. It is not a full updater application. It just periodically checks for updates and merely run Adept Updater when the user clicks on the icon. So this would be quite difficult to implement, without actually combining the two applications.

Thanks for the suggestion and for your efforts to make Kubuntu rock. :)

Thats a pity... Maybe I'll take a look at the code myself in the future.

Will we be sticking with adept with kde 4? Is the kde 4 adept any different?

Y request other option to implement the feature: Send to tray option for adept updater on minimizes the window.

Example to implement the feature: adept_updater should close adept notifier systray icon when the system is updating, and it must show too a new adpet_updater icon (because the present icon is of adept_manager and does not represent the update system function) showing "the system is updating" balloon (like as Windows XP).

I think that is a good geature.

I can confirm that this feature is not present.
Dunno how upstream will feel about such a feature though...
@usr
Wanna file an upstream report at bugs.kde.org requesting this feature?

Can't do that in Intrepid, come to think of it. The notifier-icon is a part separate notifier program.
It also seems to go to all that trouble for a hackish solution like that when you can modify any program's menu entry with kmenuedit to place it in the systray .
